How the Author Happened to Become a Business Broker, Writer, and Publisher:
While celebrating his new status with a full year of dissipation and
amusement, he saw a business broker’s ad one day that piqued
him to inquire what those people do for a living. On hearing the answer,
he knew instantly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. (It
was the type and variety of duties, the multiplicity of responsibilities,
and the freedom of independence that so attracted him.)
In 1980, he formed Honigmann, Inc. and began brokering the purchases
and sales of small businesses. In 1986, he designed and began teaching
a class in buying and selling a small business for the Continuing
Education program at St. Louis Community College. In 1992, after
searching unsuccessfully for a book meeting his standards to recommend
to his students, he committed himself to writing Buying and Selling
a Small Business.
The manuscript was favorably reviewed by two publishers, Irwin
Professional (later acquired by McGraw) which rejected for lack
of budget, and CCH (formerly Commerce Clearing House) whose contract
the author rejected to control editing.
In 2004, he established Monnet Press, taught himself how to publish
a book (with the help of books by Dan Poynter and Tom and Marilyn
Ross), and made lots of mistakes in the process.
Though now primarily occupied with publishing, he still accepts
an occasional appraising or consulting assignment.
What Else the Author Has Been Doing: In 1997, he joined the
board of directors at the Arsenal Credit Union in Arnold, Missouri.
In 2001, he was elected to the board’s executive committee.
He resigned in 2005 to have more time and energy for publishing.
Since 1999, he has served as a part-time associate with Howe &
Ely, a nationally recognized brokering and appraising firm specializing
in the retail lumber and building material industry.
In line with his business sales, which almost always involve real
estate, the author is licensed as a real estate broker by the State
of Missouri.
He was a member of The Independent Book Publishers Association
from 2004 through 2009.
The author holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering
from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a master of engineering
administration degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
